Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian have contributed to making the appearance of a shapely backside a highly sought after feature. While some women are naturally endowed with full buttocks, those who wonder whether they are appropriate candidates for a buttock augmentation, also known as a “Brazilian Butt Lift,” should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Although some plastic surgeons augment buttocks with implants, Dr. Eric Okamoto prefers instead to liposuction another body area and transfer this fat into the buttocks.
Fat extracted from any area of the body can be used for the transfer, but the best areas to start with are hips and flanks because reducing the region immediately above the buttocks amplifies the contour difference between waistline and buttocks. When inadequate fat is available from the hip-flank area to appropriately augment the buttock, other body sites (e.g. back, abdomen, thighs) should be considered to increase the fat harvest. After surgery, the buttocks will shrink over the first few months as surgical swelling resolves and some of the injected fat absorbs, but approximately 50-75% of the transferred fat will survive long term and provide for an enhanced body contour for many years.
