The eyes and the areas surrounding them are often the first facial features noticed by others, and they play a prominent role in the expression of one’s emotions and personality. During the natural aging process, the skin around the eyes can develop signs of wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness, sagging, and other concerns. Fortunately, there are numerous options available, both surgical and non-surgical, that are capable of enhancing the appearance of the eyes and producing a more alert, youthful, rested, and refreshed appearance.
If you are concerned about signs of age and fatigue around the eyes, or if you are experiencing excess skin over the eyes that is compromising your field of vision, Dr. Eric Okamoto can meet with you for an initial consultation to discuss your needs and goals and explore options that can help.
The information below offers details on both surgical and non-surgical treatments for the eyelid areas available at our practice. If you have questions, or if you are ready to schedule a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, please contact us today.
Upper and/or Lower Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery, also sometimes referred to as an eyelid lift. The procedure can be performed on either the upper lids, the lower lids, or both. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. This option offers aesthetic improvement by reducing signs of tired, aging eyes, and functional correction for patients with drooping eyelids that may be causing impaired vision. Lower blepharoplasty focuses on reducing puffiness and bags under the eyes by removing or repositioning fat and tightening the skin (if necessary). This treatment can significantly diminish signs of age, exhaustion, or lack of sleep under the eyes for a more vibrant look.
Since blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure, patients will need to plan for a recovery period, which is typically about 10 days depending on individual needs. With proper skin care and healthy lifestyle regimens, the results from eyelid surgery can last several years into the future.
Non-Surgical Options
For individuals who are good candidates for a less invasive approach, there are several non-surgical options that can enhance the eyes and provide noticeable aesthetic improvements.
Dysport® and Injectable Dermal Fillers: Dysport® is a solution very similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic. This injectable treatment can be used to smooth out signs of crow’s feet and fine lines around the eyes by relaxing the underlying muscles. Dermal filler injections on the other hand, can be effective for adding volume to hollow areas under the eyes and providing a smoother appearance.
Laser Skin Resurfacing: In some cases, laser rejuvenation therapy may be recommended to improve the texture and tone of the skin around the eyes. These treatments can stimulate production of the skin’s natural collagen, which can help firm the skin around the eyes and diminish signs of wrinkles.
Chemical Peels: Some types of chemical facial peels focus on improving skin texture and tone by exfoliating the outer layers of skin to reveal healthier layers. For some individuals with milder aesthetic concerns around the eyes, this treatment may serve as an effective option.
It is important to note that non-surgical treatments will not produce the same longevity of results that can be achieved with eyelid surgery; however, they may serve as alternatives worthy of consideration for patients with certain needs and goals.
